Welsh winter fuel payments are set to double to £200

Welsh winter fuel payments are set to double to £200, to help low-income households to pay their fuel bills.

The welcome news comes after warnings that households should expect a significant hike in the energy price cap, to be introduced in April.

It is expected that typical energy bills could increase by around 50%, taking average costs to almost £2,000 a year.

Welsh Social Justice Minister Jane Hutt said, “We are determined to do all we can to support our people with the bills they are facing,”

Who is eligible?

The grant, part of a £51 million package to support the most vulnerable households, is open to households where one individual is in receipt of certain welfare benefits and is responsible for paying the property’s energy bills.

Applicants must have been claiming any one of the following benefits between 1st December 2021 and 31stJanuary 2022:

  • Income support
  • Income-based job seekers allowance
  • Employment and support allowance
  • Universal credit
  • Working tax credits

Applications are open until 28 February 2022, although councils should have contacted households believed to be eligible.
