Tomato Energy collapse – what this means for you
Updated 10th November 2025
Tomato Energy has stopped trading, and Ofgem, the energy regulator, has stepped in to protect its customers. Around 15,300 households and 8,400 businesses will soon be moved to a new supplier.
Tomato Energy was fined £1.5 million in October after breaking Ofgem’s rules, following an investigation that began earlier this year.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Your energy supply is safe – you won’t lose power or gas.
- Don’t switch just yet – Ofgem will automatically assign you a new supplier in the coming days.
- Your credit balance is protected – any money you’ve paid will be carried over.
- Take a meter reading – note it down now to help your new supplier update your account.
- You’ll stay protected by the energy price cap – so your rates won’t suddenly jump.
As reported on 10th November, Ofgem has appointed British Gas to take on supplying Tomato Energy’s domestic customers, who will be contacted over the coming days about the changes. If customers wish to switch supplier, they can, but are advised to wait until the transfer has been completed. Customers will not be charged exit fees if they decide to switch to another supplier.
This latest collapse highlights how smaller suppliers are still feeling the pressure from rising wholesale energy prices. Ofgem’s ‘Supplier of Last Resort‘ system is designed to make sure customers are looked after when this happens.
