Preparing for the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) Switch-Off

Last Updated: 10 March 2025

As we move closer to a more modernised and efficient energy infrastructure, the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) is set to be retired by June 30, 2025. This transition marks a significant change for more than 500,000 UK households still using RTS meters.

Introduced in the 1980s, RTS has been instrumental in enabling customers to manage their energy consumption more cost-effectively by automatically switching between peak and off-peak electricity rates.

However, as the RTS system reaches the end of its operational life, it’s essential for those affected to take action to ensure continued, uninterrupted service. Energy suppliers are currently working to replace these older meters with smart meters, which offer similar benefits and more, including accurate billing, automatic meter readings, and access to exclusive tariffs.

What is RTS, and Why is it Being Phased Out?

The Radio Teleswitch Service uses radio signals to manage electricity meters, particularly those linked to electric heating and hot water systems. These meters allow customers to take advantage of lower electricity rates during off-peak hours. Despite its usefulness, the infrastructure supporting RTS has aged to the point where it can no longer be reliably maintained. This has prompted the decision to phase it out in favour of more advanced technology.

How Will This Affect You?

If you have an RTS meter, your heating and hot water systems could be disrupted once the service is switched off. You may notice that your system doesn’t operate as efficiently, potentially leading to higher energy costs. To avoid these issues, it’s crucial to upgrade to a smart meter before the June 2025 deadline.

Smart meters provide all the benefits of RTS and more, ensuring that your energy use is accurately tracked and billed. They also offer greater control over your energy consumption, enabling you to make more informed decisions about your usage and expenses.

What Should You Do Next?

You May Have an RTS Meter If:

  • If your home is heated with electricity or storage heaters
  • You live in an area without a gas supply
  • You have a separate switch box near your meter with a ‘Radio Teleswitch Service’ label.

Contact Your Electricity Supplier: Get in touch with your supplier to confirm whether you have an RTS meter and to schedule an upgrade to a smart meter.

Don’t Delay: Some customers may not yet be eligible for a smart meter upgrade, but your supplier will inform you when you can make the switch.
