Energy Saving Tips For Your Kitchen and Home

Last Updated: 04 March 2025

Energy costs continue to rise, making it more important than ever to find ways to save energy in your home. The kitchen is one of the most energy-hungry areas, but there are plenty of ways to cut costs throughout the entire home. Here’s how you can reduce your bills and make your home more energy efficient.

Kitchen Energy-Saving Tips

1. Cook Smarter
  • Use the right sized hob for your pan to avoid wasting heat.
  • Keep lids on pots and pans to cook food faster and use less energy.
  • Opt for a microwave, air fryer, or slow cooker instead of the oven where possible, as they use significantly less energy.
  • Batch cook meals and freeze portions to reduce the number of times you use the oven.
2. Be Efficient with Your Appliances
  • Defrost your freezer regularly to keep it running efficiently.
  • Set your fridge between 3-5°C and your freezer at -18°C to optimise efficiency.
  • Only boil as much water as you need in the kettle.
  • Use a dishwasher on an eco-setting, and only run it when full.
  • Let hot food cool before putting it in the fridge to avoid making it work harder.

3. Reduce Standby Energy Use
  • Unplug kitchen appliances like microwaves when not in use to stop them drawing power on standby.
  • Use a smart plug to turn off multiple devices at once.

Energy Saving Tips for the Rest of the Home

4. Heating & Hot Water
  • Lower your thermostat by just 1°C, it could save you up to £100 a year.
  • Use thermostatic radiator valves to control heating in individual rooms.
  • Bleed radiators regularly to keep them working efficiently.
  • Consider draught-proofing doors, windows, and letterboxes to prevent heat loss.
  • Set your boiler to a more efficient temperature – water should be around 55°C.
5. Smart Use of Lighting
  • Switch to LED bulbs, which use 90% less energy than traditional bulbs.
  • Use natural light as much as possible before turning on lamps.
6. Laundry & Drying
  • Wash clothes at 30°C – most detergents work just as well at lower temperatures.
  • Only wash full loads to reduce the number of washes.
  • Where possible, air dry clothes instead of using a tumble dryer.
  • If using a dryer, clean the lint filter regularly to maintain efficiency.
7. Electronics & Standby Energy Use
  • Turn off devices completely instead of leaving them on standby, as this can save around £65 a year.
  • Use power strips with switches to easily turn off multiple devices at once.
  • Enable energy saving modes on computers, TVs, and gaming consoles.
8. Water Conservation
  • Take shorter showers – cutting just one minute off can save money over the year.
  • Fix dripping taps – one leaky tap can waste thousands of litres a year.
  • Use a water-saving showerhead to reduce water use without sacrificing pressure.

Many of these tips require little effort but can make a noticeable difference in your energy bills over time.
