Breaking Energy Debt Cycles at the Housing Innovation Show 2026
Energy Angels took to the Customer Success Stage at the Housing Innovation Show this morning to address one of the most persistent challenges facing social housing: energy debt.
Ash Burd, Operations Director at Energy Angels, was joined by Callum Stanley, Corporate Account Manager at OVO, to deliver a session titled Breaking Energy Debt Cycles with Behaviour-Led Digital Interventions.
Together, they explored why traditional approaches to energy debt management are no longer sufficient — and what needs to change.
Why energy debt keeps repeating
The session challenged the idea that energy debt is purely a financial issue. Instead, Ash and Callum highlighted how arrears often stem from predictable behavioural patterns, delayed engagement, and support arriving too late to prevent escalation.
With household budgets under increasing pressure, reactive debt recovery models place growing strain on residents, landlords, and operational teams alike. The discussion focused on how earlier, behaviour-led intervention can disrupt these cycles before they become entrenched.
Behaviour-led digital intervention in practice
Drawing on real-world experience across large and diverse housing portfolios, Ash shared how data-driven behavioural insights and digital tools can help social landlords:
- Identify risk earlier using behavioural signals
- Align support to how residents actually engage
- Strengthen early-intervention models
- Reduce long-term arrears and operational pressure
Callum added perspective from the supplier side, reinforcing the importance of collaboration, data, and engagement design in supporting residents more effectively and sustainably.
Shifting from recovery to prevention
A key theme of the session was the shift from reactive debt management to prevention. By designing digital interventions around real tenant behaviours, rather than assumptions, social landlords can create meaningful, long-term change that benefits both residents and organisations.
As social landlords face increasing demands around financial inclusion, income protection, and customer success, behaviour-led digital solutions are emerging as a practical and scalable way to reduce energy debt while improving operational efficiency.
Continuing the conversation
Energy Angels would like to thank everyone who attended the session and contributed to the discussion.
If energy debt prevention, early intervention, or resident-focused digital support is part of your organisation’s priorities, we’d welcome the opportunity to continue the conversation.
