Although there are government-funded energy discounts available to help during the winter months, there is also additional funding for residents, particularly those households most vulnerable and struggling with the rising cost of living.
Auriga, based in the West Midlands, work with organisations to support their customers in vulnerable circumstances have partnered with the British Gas Energy Trust to provide support to those struggling with rising energy prices.
Help with energy bills
The British Gas Energy Trust (BGET) helps those families and individuals experiencing hardship and struggling with energy debts. You do not have to be a British Gas customer to receive support, but grants are capped at £1,500.
To be considered for a grant you must meet the following criteria:
- You live in England, Scotland or Wales
- You have not received a grant from the BGET within the last 2 years
- You must be seeking a grant to clear an outstanding debt on a current or open gas, electricity or dual fuel energy account in your name or be a member of that household, the energy account must relate to your main residence
- You have electric and/or gas debt
- You do not have savings above £1,000 and have received help from a money advice agency
- You must be in or facing Fuel Poverty
Help with water bills
If you’re one of 8 million Severn Trent Water customers, you can apply for help with your water bills.
You could receive up to 90% off the average Severn Trent Water bill through the Big Difference Scheme.
Eligibility for the scheme is based on all household income, but excludes housing entitlements, Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payments and Attendance Allowance. Disability premiums and limited capability for work elements paid within certain benefit types can also be excluded from the income calculation. If you are eligible for income-based free school meals, it’s likely that you will qualify for the Big Difference Scheme.

Help with water bills – United Utilities customers
United Utilities supplies water to customers who live in the North West of the country and United Utilities Trust Fund offers support to customers of United Utilities who are struggling to clear their water arrears.
